School - unit 3

To jest mój obowiązkowy zakres przedmiotów: inżynieria, języki obce, informatyka i WF.

This is my compulsory range of subjects: engineering, foreign languages, IT (Information Technology) and PE (Physical Education).

Mam dużo zajęć na uczelni. Muszę napisać esej oraz podejść do ustnego egzaminu (i oczywiście muszę go zdać).

I have lots of assignments at the university. I have to write an essay and take/sit an oral/spoken exam/examination (and of course I have to pass it).

Trochę się stresuję egzaminem maturalnym. To egzamin w formie papierowej (pisemny). Studenci mają również część ustną, którą prowadzą egzaminatorzy zewnętrzni. Mam nadzieję, że nie będę musiała tego powtarzać. Mój wynik musi być wysoki.

I am a bit stressed about my matura exam. It's a paper-based examination. Students have also an oral part, which is conducted by the external examiners. I hope I won't have to retake/resit it. My result/score has to be high.

Studenci mają wiele rodzajów egzaminów: mają egzaminy przez komputer, egzaminy wstępne i egzaminy próbne. To dużo, więc muszą powtarzać informacje.

Students have lots of kinds of exams: they have computer-based examinations, entrance and mock exams. It's a lot, so they have to revise information.

W każdej polskiej klasie jest tablica, pisak do tablicy, gąbka do tablicy, kreda i szafka szkolna. Lekcje są prowadzone przez nauczycieli, wychowawców lub dyrektorów.

In every Polish classroom is a blackboard, a board pen, a board rubber, a chalk and a locker. The lessons are conducted by teachers, form teachers or head teachers/principals.

Anna nie lubi szkoły, więc często jest nieobecna. Może zostać zawieszona lub wydalona ze szkoły. Niestety dyrektorka nie wie, że ona jest dręczona przez dwójkę uczniów - dlatego ona opuszcza lekcje i wagaruje.

Anna doesn't like school, so she's often absent. She can be suspended or excluded/expelled from school. Unfortunately, the principal doesn't know that she's bullied by two students - that's why she skips lessons and plays truant.

Nie znoszę szkoły - nie lubię oszukiwania/ściągania, wkuwania i dress code'u. Prawdopodobnie rzucę szkołę i zacznę edukację domową. Znajdę prywatnego/osobistego korepetytora.

I can't stand school - I don't like cheating, craming and a dress code. I will probably drop out of a school and start a homeschooling. I will find a private/personal tutor.

Agata ma głowę do liczb. Zawsze otrzymuje najwyższe oceny z matematyki. Ogólnie matematyka to dla niej bułka z masłem. Niestety nie ma pojęcia o językach obcych i pozostaje w tyle za innymi studentami.

Agata has a good head for figures. She always receives the highest maths marks. In general, maths is a piece of cake for her. Unfortunately, she has no clue about foreign languages and she falls behind other students.

Mój dziadek potrafi zapamiętać wiele informacji (ma dobrą pamięć krótkotrwałą). Niestety, często zapomina te fakty i ma coś na końcu języka. On może wysilać umysł, ale to wszystko na nic - on ma kiepską pamięć długotrwałą.

My grandpa can memorize lots of information (he has good short-term memory). Unfortunately, he often forgets these facts and has sth on the tip of his tongue. He can jog his memory, but it's all for nothing - he has bad long-term memory.

Ania jest pilną studentką. Jest zawsze obecna, podnosi rękę na każdej lekcji, organizuje różne apele, uroczystości czy akcje charytatywne. Ona nie wie, co to wagary lub wydalenie. Oprócz tego pracuje społecznie i uczy się gry na instrumencie.

Ania is a busy student. She's always present, puts up her hand on every lesson and organizes different assemblies, ceremonies or charity events. She doesn't know what truancy or expulsion is. Except that, she does voluntary work and learns an instrument.

Jestem introwertykiem, więc ciężko mi znaleźć zatrudnienie. Nie wychodzę też ze znajomymi, bo nie lubię spotkań towarzyskich. Nie dołączam też do klubów ani nie zapisuję się na kursy.

I'm an introvert, so it's hard for me to find employment. I also don't go out with friends because I don't like social events. I also don't join clubs or sign up for courses.

Tomek jest ekstrawertykiem. Uczęszcza na różne zajęcia pozalekcyjne.Np. uprawia sport, gra w klubie teatralnym, chodzi na kurs żeglarski, śpiewa w chórze i uczy się rzemiosła.

Tomek is extrovert. He attends different extracurricular activities. For instance, he does/practises sport, plays in a drama club, does the sailing course, sings in the choir and learns a craft.

Skończyłam szkołę średnią, ale chcę się uczyć samodzielnie lub zrobić sobie rok przerwy... Nie chcę dostać się na studia i mieszkać w akademiku.

I graduated a secondary school but I want to learn independently or have a gap year... I don't want to get into university and live in a dorm/dormitory/hall of residence.

Mój kuzyn jest studentem i studiuje za granicą. Uczęszcza na wykłady i pisze pracę dyplomową. Wkrótce złoży/odda tę pracę i będzie ją bronił.

My cousin is a undergraduate/university student and studies abroad. He attends lectures and writes a thesis/dissertation. He will soon submit/hand in this thesis and defend it.

Rodzina mojego męża jest wykształcona. Mają różne stopnie naukowe: licencjat, stopień magistra, doktora filozofii, magistra nauk ścisłych.

My husband's family is educated. They have different academic degrees: Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science.

Właśnie otrzymałam tytuł magistra. Mam różne perspektywy zawodowe, ale zostanę naukowcem. Chcę pracować w laboratorium i prowadzić badania. Moi wykładowcy poparli ten pomysł.

I've just received a Master's degree. I have different career prospects but I'm going to be a scientist. I want to work in a lab/laboratory and do a research. My lecturers supported/approved this idea.

W naszej szkole mamy stołówkę, liczne sale lekcyjne, pracownię komputerową, gabinet dyrektora, pokój nauczycielski, plac zabaw i boisko sportowe.

In our school we have a cafeteria/canteen, many classrooms, a computer lab, a head teacher's office, a staff room, a playground and sports field.

Nie lubię uczyć się na pamięć, ponieważ nie jest to satysfakcjonujące. Informacja brzmi znajomo, ale jej nie pamiętam. Niestety, ta metoda jest obowiązkowa w polskich szkołach ze względu na rozbudowany ogólnopolski program nauczania.

I don't like learning by heart/by rote, because it's not rewarding. Information rings a bell, but I don't remember it. Unfortunately, this method is compulsory in Polish schools, because of an extensive national curriculum.

W Polsce mamy różne etapy kształcenia: obowiązkowy i nieobowiązkowy. Uczniowie muszą realizować minimum programowe w przedszkolu, szkole podstawowej i liceum

In Poland we have different educationial stages: compulsory and optional. Students have to realize a core curriculum in a nursery school/kindergarten, an elementary/a primary school and in a secondary school.

Bogatych rodziców stać na opłacenie prywatnej szkoły. Dzięki temu ich dzieci mogą dostać się na prestiżową uczelnię. Szkoły państwowe/publiczne są gorsze. Mam tu na myśli zwłaszcza technika i szkoły zawodowe.

Rich parents can afford to pay for private school. Thanks to this, their children can get into a prestigious university. State/public school are worse. I mean especially technical schools and vocational schools.

Szkoła podstawowa ma trzy etapy edukacyjne: klasy 1-3, klasy 4-6 i klasy 7-8. Następnie uczniowie mogą rozpocząć szkołę średnią ogólnokształcącą (ten etap nazywa się liceum). Ostatni to uniwersytet lub college (jest to etap pomaturalny).

The elementary school has three educational stages: lower primary, upper primary and lower secondary. Then students can start a grammar school (this stage calls upper secondary). The last one is university or college (this is tertiary stage).
